Welcome Leigh Saltzman as New Senior Youth Group Advisor!

As a former member and Vice President of TREATY, I am excited to take on the role of senior youth group advisor!
I am looking forward to working with the Senior TREATY members and planning events throughout the summer and the upcoming school year.
I graduated from Kent State University in 2018 with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, and I currently work at the Cyert Center for Early Education at CMU. In my free time, I like going to Penguins games, reading, enjoying the city’s cultural arts, and attending concerts.
I can’t wait to see you at the upcoming TREATY events!

Our Temple David Teens participated in the annual J-Serve Pittsburgh 2021 Community Service Project.
J-Serve is an opportunity for teens in grades 6-12 to give back to their community, meet new friends while “learning about the value of service and community engagement.”
Rabbi Symons and Miss Rachael Farber reached out to the Monroeville Public Library to see if our teens could help out in any way. MPL was pleased to welcome these hardworking dedicated teens to help clean up, paint, organize, and package the toys and equipment that are used in the children’s area located downstairs. Due to last year’s abrupt COVID-related closure, the library was not prepared, and has since become short staffed, making it a challenge to have everything in place for when they fully reopen.
We appreciate and value our Rabbi, Miss Farber, and our Temple David teens along with a few teens from the surrounding Pittsburgh area, who chose to help out our community and make a difference.
THANK YOU!

TREATY (Temple David’s Senior Youth Group) has been busy this fall. In September, we had a kick-off meeting and discussed our ideas for the year. The teens decided that they wanted to see this year as a rebuilding year and working to promote and recruit to build a strong TREATY for the future.

Our first event was apple picking at Triple B Farms. The teens spent the day exploring the farm, working together to complete a corn maze, eating delicious fresh farm food, and picking apples. While picking apples we discussed how there are people who don’t have access to fresh produce and that Cross Roads Food Pantry provides these. The teens learned about how we are commanded to leave the corners of our fields for the stranger and what they thought this meant. They then donated some of their freshly picked apples to a bag that was later donated to Cross Roads Food Pantry.
Our second event was a tour of the Meadows of Monroeville ice cream shop. They learned all about how the ice cream is made and even got to make batches of vanilla and chocolate themselves. They then got to eat a sample of the ice cream they made and add sundae toppings. While enjoying our ice cream, we spoke of Food Deserts and Food Shaming related to cafeteria school food. The teens had not really thought about their classmates who have to eat the free lunch and what school lunch is like for them. After talking the teens shared their reflections:
“I think that people should donate good (tasty) food.”—Andrew Bright
“It is horrible that people struggle with food and everyone needs to help them to not struggle.”—Sammy Sloan
“I never realized how easy and nice I had it when it came to food. I am going to do my best to help the less fortunate, in order to get the food they need.”—Aaron Sloan
“I was shocked that people don’t get the same luxuries that we do. You don’t really think about the people who have to take any food, and that we can pick whatever we think is good to eat. It’s crazy!”—Gabby Keough
We are so excited to see what 2020 will bring and will have updates in the spring.
Rachael Farber,
Youth Coordinator
