J-Street Pittsburgh
March 2021
Our Temple David Teens participated in the annual J-Serve Pittsburgh 2021 Community Service Project.
J-Serve is an opportunity for teens in grades 6-12 to give back to their community, meet new friends while “learning about the value of service and community engagement.”
Rabbi Symons and Miss Rachael Farber reached out to the Monroeville Public Library to see if our teens could help out in any way. MPL was pleased to welcome these hardworking dedicated teens to help clean up, paint, organize, and package the toys and equipment that are used in the children’s area located downstairs. Due to last year’s abrupt COVID-related closure, the library was not prepared, and has since become short staffed, making it a challenge to have everything in place for when they fully reopen.
We appreciate and value our Rabbi, Miss Farber, and our Temple David teens along with a few teens from the surrounding Pittsburgh area, who chose to help out our community and make a difference.
THANK YOU!

Gateway Students Visit Temple David
On Monday February 3, Mr. Shawn Whelan brought a group of 19 students from his World Religions class to Temple David. The mixed class of Juniors and Seniors were able to visit the synagogue with a very warm welcome from Rabbi Howie Stein* and Mr. Stan Beck. The students were able to learn about Friday services, the basic understandings of the Torah scrolls, and the tightknit relationship within the Jewish community. Though the class lacked Jewish classmates, overall they walked away with more knowledge and understanding of the faith of Judaism and its followers through the beautiful community and congregation of Temple David.
In addition to Temple David, the students visited the Muslim Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple, North American Martyrs Catholic Church, the Monroeville Assembly of God Church, and the Wat Padhammaratana Buddhist Temple. At each location, the students learned about the basic tenets, culture, language, and customs of the various religions. This field trip has been a long-standing Gateway High School tradition for over twenty years, and we all are very thankful to everyone who helped us learn about the vibrant religious communities of Monroeville.
